Name of Organization
San Luis Valley GIS/GPS Authority
Mission Statement
The San Luis Valley GIS/GPS Authority (SLV GIS) is a regional agency tasked with the design, development, implementation and maintenance of GIS/GPS (Geographic Information Systems/Global Positioning Systems) services and products for the positive development of the San Luis Valley. We were created by the collective county commissioners from the six member counties created SLV GIS in 1997 under Colorado Revised Statutes ¤ 29-1-203. SLV GIS is not a taxing entity; rather it has been designed to be a self-sustaining government enterprise. In essence, rather than being an additional tax burden to the public, SLV GIS enhances local governments, private businesses, non-profit groups, federal and state agencies and individual citizens through the provision of seamless, standardized GIS coverages across this 8,000+ square mile region. Our research indicates that we are the only regional GIS Authority that is NOT tax-based within the entire USA.
Affiliations
We work closely with the E911 Authority and the six counties. We also provide services for the NFS, BLM, USFW&S, CSF and LSA (a private land management company).
Skill Sets/Area of Focus
SLV GIS is a full-service GIS/GPS provider. The office utilizes two ArcInfo site licenses, AutoCAD Map, ArcView, a large format scanner, plotter, GeoExplorer 3 (a GPS data collector), and numerous ArcView extensions that provide the capability of spatial analyses, coordinate geometry (COGO), metadata provisions and addressing. We have become an integral component within the San Luis Valley and interact frequently with emergency service (E911), planning, natural resource management, and development. We also offer large format color plotting services.
New Directions Organization is Taking
We are migrating this year towards a better procedure for updating of our data (especially parcel data) through broadband access to each county, and hosting our data via the internet and our website (www.slvgis.info). SLV GIS began the San Luis Valley GIS Users group in 2004. This group meets quarterly to discuss further GIS education and issues.
Physical Assets/Facilities
Our office is located at 419 San Juan Avenue. See above for specifics.
Fees Charged
We charge $55.00/hour, and/or $4.50 per square foot for color maps, $3.50 per square foot for black and white maps.
Needs of Organizations
We are always in need of contractual work.
